Overview.
In 1830 the Southern provinces broke away from
the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the Kingdom of Belgium was
established.
In 1831 Leopold, Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha,
became the first King of Belgium.

Appendix 1. The Independent State of Congo
(L'Etat Indépendant du Congo)
Overview.
The General Act of the Berlin Conference
(November 1884) confirmed the Independent State of Congo as as private property
of the International Congo Society. Thus the territory of today's
Democratic Republic of the Congo, some two million square kilometers, was made
essentially the property of Léopold II, King of Belgium.
On November 15, 1908, the Parliament of Belgium
annexed the Independent State of Congo and took over its
administration
