Limburg

Overview.

The Duchy of Limburg was formed in the 11th century around the town of Limbourg (Belgium).

After Duke Walram IV of Limburg died in 1279, the Duchy of Limburg passed to his daughter Ermendarde / Irmgard, the first wife of Count Rainald I of Gelderland. She died childless in 1283, and her husband claimed the Duchy. This claim was recognized by King Rudolph I of the Romans. However, Walram's brother Adolf of Berg also claimed the Duchy after Irmgard's death. He sold his claim in 1283 to Duke John I of Brabant. Between 1283 and 1288, there were several smaller confrontations between both sides, none of them decisive. In 1288, Rainald of Gelderland sold his rights to Limburg to Henry of Luxemburg. This angered Duke John I of Brabant, who defeated Rainald I in the battle of Worringen, and united Limburg with Brabant.
