Brandenburg

Part I. The 12th century-1415

Overview.

In 1134, Lothar, the Roman Emperor, gave the investiture of the North Mark to Albert "the Bear" (+1170), a representative of the House of Ascania. Fighting the neighboring Slavs (Wends) Albert extended the area of his Mark, and so became the founder of the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

The Margraves of Brandenburg were recognized as Electors and Arch-Chamberlains of the Holy Roman Empire by the mid-12th century, and this right was confirmed by the Golden Bull of Emperor Charles IV in 1356.

In 1258, John I (+1266) and Otto III (+1267), sons of Margrave Albert II, had agreed upon a division of their lands, but the arrangement only took effect on Otto's death in 1267, when John's son, John II, received the electoral dignity, together with the southern part of the Margraviate, which centred around Stendal, and Otto's son, John III, the northern or Saltzwedel portion [31: volume IV (1910); p.420] [30: p.41-42].

In 1317, the Line of Salzwedel became extinct, and its part of Brandenburg passed to the Line of Stendal [31: volume IV (1910); p.420] [30: p.43].
In 1320 the Brandenburg branch of the Ascanian House of became extinct [31: volume IV (1910); p.421] [30: p.80].

In 1323-1373, Brandenburg belonged to the House of Bavaria [31: volume IV (1910); p.421].

In 1373-1415, Brandenburg belonged to the House of Luxembourg [31: volume IV (1910); p.421].

In April 1415, Sigismund of Luxembourg, King of the Romans invested Frederick of Hohenzollern and his heirs with the Margraviate of Brandenburg together with the electoral privilege and the office of chamberlain in return for a payment, but the formal ceremony of investiture was delayed until April 1417 [31: volume IV (1910); p.421].

In Sep 1429, Sigismund of Luxemburg gave the Neumark part of Brandenburg as fief to the Teutonic Order (the Order had kept the territory as a pawn since 1402) [33: Band III (1894); p.18, 35, 496].

>>> --- 1348-1350 ( the False Waldemar )

Notes.
In 1348, an old man appeared in Brandenburg who claimed to be the Margrave Waldemar of Brandenburg who really died in 1319. This false Waldemar was recognized by the King of Poland, and other neighboring rulers. He was welcomed by a large number of the people in Brandenburg. Charles IV, King of the Romans, who seized this opportunity to deal a blow at his enemy Elector Louis of Bavaria, invested the false Waldemar with the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1348). This step compelled Louis to make peace with King Charles IV, who abandoned the false Waldemar and invested Louis with Brandenburg, and in return was recognized as King. By 1350, Elector Louis of Bavaria had driven his opponent from the land, and the false Woldermar retired to the court of his "relatives", the Princes of Anhalt, who recognized him as Head of their ruling House of Ascania. There he died at in 1356 [31: volume IV (1910); p.421].
