Courland & Semigallia ( Kurzemes & Zemgales )

Overview.

In Nov 1561, during the Livonian Wars, King Sigismund II Augustus of Poland and the Teutonic Knights in Livonia reached an agreement known as the Vilnius / Wilno Pact. By the agreement lands of the Teutonic Order in Livonia passed to Poland, and the King of Poland granted secularized Courland and Semigallia to Gotthard Kettler, the last Master of the Teutonic Order in Livonia, as a vassal state of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Gotthard Kettler, who had converted to Lutheranism, became the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia.

In 1795, as Russia, Prussia, and Austria began the third division of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Peter of Biron, the last Duke of Courland and Semigallia, gave up his rights to Russia that annexed Courland and Semigallia.
