England
Overview
In 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, conquered
England and became King of England.
In 1649, after the execution of King Charles I, a
republic named the Commonwealth of England was established.
In 1653, Oliver Cromwell became a hereditary
ruler of England with the title of Lord-Protector, thus de facto establishing a
new form of monarchy in England known as the Protectorate.
In 1659, Lord-Protector Richard Cromwell
resigned, and the Kingdom of England was restored.
By the Act of Union of 1707, it was decided that
the two Kingdoms of England and Scotland should be united forever into one
Kingdom by the Name of Great Britain
