Notes.
1. Ca.1221, Margaret II, the future Countess of Flanders and Hainaut, divorced Bourchard of Avesnes (+1244), her first husband. In 1223, Margaret married William (+1231), Lord of Dampierre.
2. After Margaret II succeeded Flanders and Hainaut, there was an armed conflict between her children of her first and second marriages. By a by a compromise of 1246 that ended the conflict, Countess Margaret II recognized John of Avesnes (+1257), her eldest son of the first marriage, as her heir in Hainaut, and William of Dampierre, the eldest son of the second marriage as heir in Flanders. Then Margaret II made William of Dampierre her co-ruler in Flanders. In 1251, after the death of William, Margaret II made Guy of Dampierre (+1305), the second son of the second marriage, her co-ruler in Flanders. After the death of Countess Margaret II in 1280, Guy of Dampierre became the sole ruler of Flanders, and John of Avesnes (+1304), son of John of Avesnes (+1257), succeeded his grandmother in Hainaut.
