Gelderland / Guelders ( Gelre
)
Overview.
In the the 11th century, the County of Gelderland
emerged as a part of the Holy Roman Empire.
In 1339, the Roman Emperor Louis IV elevated
Gelderland to the status of Duchy.
In 1543, by the Treaty of Venloo, William "the
Rich", Duke of Jülich, Kleve, and Berg, ceded Gelderland and Zutphen, to
Emperor Charles V, who added these lands to his Low Countries.
After 1581, when the rebellious States-General of
the Low Countries officially declared the throne of Gelderland and other lands
vacant, the three northern quarters of Gelderland became part of the United
Provinces of the Netherlands, while the Upper Quarter remained with the Southern
Low Countries united with the Crown of Spain.
In 1713, by the Treaty of Utrecht, ending the War
of the Spanish Succession, the Spanish Upper Quarter was again divided between
Prussia (Geldern, Viersen, Horst, Venray), the United Provinces of the
Netherlands (Venlo, Montfort, Echt), Austria (Roermond, Niederkrüchten,
Weert), and the Duchy of Jülich (Erkelenz).
In 1795, France annexed the Duchy of
Gelderland.
In 1814, by the Peace of Paris the bulk of
Gelderland was incorporated in the Netherlands, the remainder falling to
Prussia.

Notes.
1. In 1371, Duke Reinald III died without issue.
The pretenders to the ducal throne were his two sisters: Matilda, who was
married to Count John II of Blois, and Mary, the mother of William of
Jülich, in whose behalf she claimed the throne of Gelderland. The war
lasted eight years, with Mary and her supporters emerging victorious, and
William of Jülich becoming Duke of Gelderland.
